Dr. S.C. Sharma


Dr. S. C. Sharma is an educationist, researcher and an administrator. He is the former Director of Centre for Manufacturing Research & Technology Utilization (CMRTU), Centre for Social Service & Skills Promotion (SKIP) and Principal of R V College of Engineering, Bangalore. Presently, he is the Vice Chairman, Karnataka State Council for Higher Education, Government of Karnataka, Vice Chancellor of Tumkur University, Tumkur. He is a member of State Planning Board of Government of Karnataka.

He has eight doctoral conferment based on theses Viz. Ph.D. (Mech. Engg., Mysore University), Doctor of Science D.Sc. (Mat. Sci., Mangalore University), Doctor of Engg. (Mech. Engg. Mysore University), Doctor of Science, D.Sc.(Computer Sci. & Engg., Kuvempu University), Doctor of Engineering, D.Engg.(Engg., Avinashilingam University), Doctor of Science, D.Sc.(Materials Science, Deakin University, Australia) and D.Lit (Music, Avinashilingam University) and Doctor of Law (LLD) from the prestigious National Law School of India University, Bangalore. He obtained LLB from Bangalore University.

He is conferred Honoris Causa Doctor of Literature for Education and Social Service (Mangalore University, 2007), Honoris Causa Doctor of Science (Avinashilingam University for Women, Tamil Nadu, 2005), Honoris Causa Doctor of Letters for Education and Social Service (Karnataka University, Dharwad, 2008) and Honoris Causa Doctor of Science (Kuvempu University, 2009). He has been awarded Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan National Award for Best Engineering College Principal, conferred by ISTE, New Delhi, 2008-09.

He established five Centres of Excellence dedicated to Education & Service for the inopportune. The dynamics of his mission of producing human resource of caliber belonging to the socially and economically disadvantaged involves exploring the innate talent and research potential in them and providing opportunity to carve a niche in their career. A number of less fortunate have been elevated to the Zenith of their careers through CMRTU. He has guided oppressed class youth to acquire Ph.D., bringing sea change in their families. He has found engineering solutions to the rural issues by formulating topics for their research studies, yielding duel benefits to the society with the support of funding agencies like ISRO, DST, CABS, CSIR, ADA, DBT, GTRE, LRDE, UGC, AICTE, etc worth Rs10,00 Crore. The outcome of the research is the development of over 110 advanced materials for low cost housing, earthquake resistant structures, rain water harvesting, agro tools apart from materials for defense & aerospace applications. He has infused self-esteem in the oppressed youth by inspiring them to publish research papers and thus enabled them to occupy respectable positions in reputed organizations.

He has identified more than 5000 orphans, juvenile delinquents and speech & hearing impaired and provided them education and material support and uplifted them by giving a tryst to their destiny. He has implemented non-formal technical training in Welding, CNC machining, Radio and TV Engineering, Electrical Home Appliances, DTP & Screen Printing, Book Binding, Masonry, etc for the destitute, street urchins and school dropout which has fetched them cozy jobs. He is engaged in a relentless battle against unemployment by a fusion of the market requirements and the technical skills of the trainees through the Centre for Social Service and Skills Promotion (SKIP) as its founder Director. Through MOU with Rajiv Gandhi Polytechnic, Arunachala Pradesh, he has trained the tribal community of the NE region of India on Computer Hardware & Software, Electronic Hardware and Automotives. The centre has been awarded Karnataka Rajyothsava Award-2005 by the GOK, for its invaluable contributions to the society.

He stood for the cause of more than 5,000 weaker section and widowed woman folk in distress by offering training programmes and extension services. He is striving for the cause of human rights, social justice and empowerment.He established Centre for Sustainable Technology and Clean Energy for the development of green technologies, such as vermicomposting of city garbage, sewage sludge for the benefit of the farming community and trained them on biotechnological applications for effective abatement of pollution hazards due to toxic constituents. The organic humus developed using vermicomposting technology has provided succor to marginal farmers by unfolding indigenous job market. More than 3,000 farmers below the poverty line have reaped the benefits of these unique programmes.

He has been propagating antialcoholism salvaging thousands of victims of the dreaded menace by conducting mass programme for functional literacy for the rural poor. He has rehabilitated 2,000 spastics, leprosy cured children, and deserted women through his time tested, scientifically evolved simplex educational modules. He has infused Gandhian ideology into the hearts of gullible masses through well-planned Adult education programmes, AIDS Awareness programme, etc.

He has published 110 research papers in International refereed journals and has delivered keynote addresses in International Conferences. He has presented 375 research articles and has a number of citations. He has visited as a senior scientist, Universities and Research Laboratories of International repute across the globe. He is the UGC nominated member of the Executive Council of VTU, Belgaum. He served as Visiting Scientist of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and is serving as Honorary Professor of Eminence of Mangalore University. He is a member of the Syndicate of Mangalore University, UGC Nominated Senate Member of Jain Viswa Bharati University, Ladnun, Rajasthan, member of the Advisory committee, Indian Institute of Dalit Studies, New Delhi, member of the Governing Council (VC Nominee, VTU) of Sir MVIT, Bangalore.

He is a counselor and an educational columnist in print and electronic media. Lakhs of despondent youth have been transformed by his counseling. He has authored a number of books for the novice and the devout, which have received wide recognition including that of Sahitya Academy Award for his book in Kannada which has enabled even the school dropout youth to comprehend the engineering concepts.

He represented India at the first forum of Global Network of Religions for Children organized by Arigatou Foundation, Tokyo (May 2000) and at the second forum in Geneva (May 2004) and effectively delineated the Action programme for the Education of the underprivileged children of the World which has received special attention by the UN for possible adoption in global Educational policy for children.

He has established a techno culture museum ‘Kriyakalpa’, which focuses on the technological content in the centuries old practices. The artifacts preserved in the museum have a deep scientific semblance tinged with folk relevance. The museum has received the patronage of the Kannada and Culture Department, GOK and is honoured with Janapada Yakshagana Academy Awards – 2000 by the GOK.

He is a recipient of ‘Rajyothsava Award’, of Karnataka State, UGC Career Award, UGC National Fellowship and KEMPEGOWDA Award of Bangalore City Corporation, Dr. B R Ambedkar and Babu Jagajeevanram Awards of GOK, Mother Theresa Award of the Centre for Socio-Economic Development, Bangalore and Karnataka Kalashree Award and Ganakalashree Award for his contributions to the field of music. The benefits of his innovative societal programmes have percolated to the weaker sections and resulted in amelioration of their deplorable living conditions, social justice and empowerment.  He is a recipient of prestigious Dr. Raja Ramanna Award of Govt. of Karnataka for the year 2010 for his outstanding contribution to science education.
